Master’s Program in Economics and Development Studies FEB UNS Holds the Second Workshop on Life Cycle Assessment

The Master’s Program in Economics and Development Studies (MESP), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) organized the second series of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Workshop on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, at the Teleconference Room, Soedarah Soepono Building, FEB UNS. The workshop was attended by MESP master’s students and featured Akmilatul Maghfiroh, M.Sc., Executive Director of the Decarbonomics Center, as the main speaker. This activity was a continuation of the previous series and aimed to deepen both the understanding and practical application of LCA methods in the context of sustainable economics.

LCA is an analytical method used to assess the environmental impact of a product, service, or activity from its production stage to the end of its life cycle. Within the framework of the green economy, LCA plays a vital role in measuring energy and resource efficiency, while also serving as a foundation for policy development in green and circular economies.

Head of the MESP Program, Prof. Dr. Suryanto, S.E., M.S., in his opening remarks, emphasized that the workshop provided an important opportunity for students to gain deeper insight into the application of LCA in the field of economics. “This is the second time we are discussing LCA in a more practical way. Hopefully, students can understand how LCA can be applied in economics and make use of various open-source LCA tools,” said Prof. Suryanto.

He also stressed the importance of active student participation to acquire new perspectives on environmental economics. Prof. Suryanto expressed his appreciation to the guest speaker and hoped that her guidance would help students better understand the techniques and strategies for effective use of LCA.

This workshop aligns with the commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production and SDG 13: Climate Action, by promoting the understanding and application of LCA as a tool to support sustainable and environmentally responsible economic practices.
