Marketing and Behavioral Research Group FEB UNS Discusses the Development of Reputable Journals and the Management of Scientific Publications with ISEI

Marketing and Behavioral Research Group (RG), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) alongside the Indonesian Economics Undergraduate Association (ISEI) Surakarta held a Workshop with the theme Developing a Reputable Journal and Managing Scientific Publications, Monday, October 23, 2023 at Café BoloDewe Manahan, Solo.

Dr. Ahmad Ikhwan S., SE., MT., Chairman of Marketing and Behavioral RG FEB UNS in his remarks expressed his gratitude to Lukman Hakim, Ph.D., and Gunawan Setyadi who had delivered material at the workshop attended by academicians from UNS and those from out of UNS. “This workshop was conducted in line with our concern in the Marketing and Behavior RG, after going through discussions with ISEI, which has a publication division to develop a reputable Journal. Hopefully, there will be a forum that can technically help scientific article publication management prepared by the academic community, especially in FEB UNS,” he said.

Lukman Hakim, Ph.D., added that, so far, for the journals in FEB, there have been initiatives taken in every study program, but the central focus is regarding a journal’s sustainability until it can get indexed in Scopus. “The initiative has been taken in each study program in FEB UNS. In order to be sustainable and to get indexed in Scopus, the most essential foundation in establishing a journal is consistency, and adequate numbers of publications, which should not be too large and not too little, while the reviewers and partners are also well-managed. The journal management is carried out by a professional institution appointed by the faculty, thus, it is not a side job of the faculty members,” he explained later.

Furthermore, Lukman, Ph.D., also talked about the dynamics of managing professional organizations and also publications in ISEI.

Meanwhile, Gunawan in his material explained that international publications resulting from academic research are one of the important criteria for obtaining higher accreditation and university ranking. Based on the SINTA database, UNS produced 8,557 Scopus documents with 49,157 citations as of January 2022, where 3% of the publications were published in the top 10% percentile top journals and 8.4% were included in the top 10% most cited worldwide. However, publications in the fields of business, management, and accounting accounted for only 3% and 5.6% of the Social Sciences publications.

Furthermore, an overview of FEB publications in Scopus as of January 2022 listed 226 documents (159 journal articles, 7 book chapters, and 60 conference papers). “There is quite a hope of seeing this number doubled in the near future because there are quite a number of associate professors who have the potential to be appointed as professors. FEB’s resources and capital can support UNS, since becoming a world-class research university is an excellent achievement and hopefully, it can be realized soon,” he said later.

That is why it is necessary to establish a journal clinic in FEB. The existence of this clinic is to provide international publication assistance for S1, S2, S3, and lecturers, starting from submission to publication process in Scopus/Thomson ISI Indexed International Journal.

In addition, the existence of the publication clinic can also provide technical support for scientific publications to lecturers and students, improving the quality and quantity of research publications in FEB. Moreover, the clinic is also expected to increase research collaboration by bridging the relationship between FEB Lecturers with international and national institutions. In the forum, participants actively discussed, and gave suggestions and input to the two speakers.
