Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), in collaboration with PT Bank Syariah Nasional (BSN), organized a General Lecture titled “Driving Retail Funding Growth Through Digital Transformation” on Thursday, April 9, 2026, at the Konimex Auditorium, Bachtiar Effendi Building, FEB UNS. The event featured Ari Kurniaman, the Network & Retail Funding Director of PT Bank Syariah Nasional, as the keynote speaker.

The Dean of FEB UNS, Prof. Bhimo Rizky Samudro, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., emphasized the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions and the corporate sector in his opening remarks. He stated that FEB UNS does not merely position itself as a labor provider, but as a strategic partner in building the financial ecosystem, particularly when navigating digital transformation.

“This collaboration is essential for students to not only mastering the theory, but also obtain a real overview of the actual practices. Synchronization between the financial market and the real sector, especially with the presence of digital aspects, is something that needs to be continually developed,” Prof. Bhimo remarked.

Prof. Bhimo also added that inputs from the industry are highly required to enhance the relevance of learning with the demands of the professional workforce.

During the presentation session, Ari Kurniaman explained that the potential for Islamic banking in Indonesia remains substantial, even though its market share currently hovers around 7–8% of the national banking industry. With a Muslim-majority population and the support of digitalization, Islamic banking has the opportunity to grow up to 18–20% by 2028 through product innovation and ecosystem strengthening.

He explained that retail funding serves as a vital key to supporting financing growth, particularly for the MSME sector and halal financing. “Retail funds represent a stable, low-cost, and sustainable source of funding, making them an essential foundation for banking business growth,” Ari explained.

Furthermore, Ari emphasized that digital transformation has significantly altered customer behavior. Digital banking is no longer a mere complement, but has become the primary channel in banking services. The rising usage of mobile banking, QRIS, and real-time payment systems like BI-FAST indicates a shift toward a faster, more convenient, and inclusive financial ecosystem.

In its growth strategy, BSN is developing three main pillars: digital acquisition, strengthening community ecosystems (such as mosques, campuses, and halal MSMEs), and reinforcing institutional services. Additionally, integration with the halal ecosystem, including Hajj and Umrah, zakat, waqf, and the education sector, serves as a master key to establishing sustainable growth.

This event also provided an opportunity for students to engage in direct discussions with an industry practitioner, thereby enriching their insights and understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the digital-based Islamic financial sector. Through this activity, FEB UNS confirms its commitment to supporting the development of student competencies that are adaptive to technological advancements and industry needs, while reinforcing synergy between academia and practitioners.

This general lecture aligns with the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) through the improvement of practice-based learning quality, Goal 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by strengthening financial literacy and inclusion, and Goal 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through the utilization of digital transformation within the banking sector.

Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) Surakarta welcomed a visit from Al Azhar 15 Islamic Senior High School Semarang on Tuesday, 30 September 2025. The event took place at the Suhardi Building Hall, FEB UNS. The visiting group consisted of 52 students and 6 accompanying teachers and was received by the Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs, Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., along with the Heads of Undergraduate Study Programs at FEB UNS.

In her remarks, Prof. Tri expressed her appreciation for the visit and emphasized the importance of introducing university life to high school students early on as preparation for their future educational paths. She also highlighted FEB UNS’s position as one of the leading faculties offering internationally recognized education. This is reflected in the achievement of international accreditation from AQAS, in addition to national accreditation from LAMEMBA, which has granted the Accounting, Management, and Development Economics Study Programs the “Excellent” rating, while the Digital Business Study Program received “Excellent” status—an impressive accomplishment considering the program was established only three years ago.

Prof. Tri further explained that the Digital Business Study Program is among the most competitive at UNS, ranking second among programs in the social sciences and humanities cluster. Interest among high school students to enroll at UNS is also very high, with the number of applicants placing UNS in the second position nationwide. At the international level, FEB UNS maintains a strong position. In global rankings, the fields of Economics and Accounting are positioned in the 300s, while Business and Management are ranked in the 600s globally. “You don’t need to go abroad to get a quality education because FEB UNS is already competitive at the global level,” stated Prof. Tri.

She also introduced FEB UNS’s four regular undergraduate study programs, the Development Economics, Accounting, Management, and Digital Business study program, along with international classes offered in Accounting, Management, and Development Economics. These international programs were presented to students through a special video screening during the visit.

Representing the school, Ainun Jariyati, S.Pd., Gr., Vice Principal for Student Affairs, explained the purpose of the visit. The event continued with presentations from the Heads of Undergraduate Study Programs and an interactive discussion and Q&A session with the students.

To make the session more engaging, students participated in a quiz using the Kahoot! platform, which generated high enthusiasm. Through this educational game, students were able to test their knowledge and gain deeper insights into FEB UNS in a fun way. Those who achieved the highest scores received prizes as a token of appreciation for their active participation and enthusiasm.

This visit not only strengthened the partnership between educational institutions but also provided students with a closer look at academic life in higher education, particularly at FEB UNS.
The activity aligns with UNS’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), by expanding educational access and improving quality for younger generations.

There are various achievements are achieved by UNS, one of the most recent achievement is related with the announcement from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education (KEMENRISTEKDIKTI) regarding the ranking of UNS that belong to the first cluster of the best among approximately 4000 universities/higher education in Indonesia. This is inline with the current achievement of the Undergraduate Program in Economics in obtaining the certification from AUN-QA. These was mentioned by the Associate Dean of Student and Alumni Affairs of FEB UNS, Dr. Mugi Harsono, in his opening remarks during the Students’ Parents and Guardian Forum for the new student of the academic year of 2019, in FEB UNS 5th Building Hall.
This event is conducted by the Undergraduate in Economics Study Program on Wednesday, August 21st, 2019. In the event, the Head of Study Program, Bhimo Rizky Samudro, Ph.D delivers various information that related with the study program to the parents and guardian, which covers assessment process, career support and development, job opportunities, as well as the knowledge that will be gained by the students from the program. However, to facilitate and expedite students’ study, the faculty cannot be the only party involved. There should be a cooperation and communication among the faculty or study program, the students, and the parents and/or the guardians.
Bhimo mention that he does not want any cases where the parents do not know about their children’s study and only focused on the financial support provided to the students. He also mentions that, “the faculty has facilitated the parents to monitor their children’s study development through academic system, we will demonstrate how to use the system later.”
In additions it is expected that the parents/guardians do not hesitate to give any feedback or constructive critics to the study program, in order to improve the study program.

Sharia Fintech offers various lending option with many facilities compared to conventional Fintech. This covers digital payment and financial service with transparent accounting and consultation. However, low community interaction (approximately 29.7%), not-supported infrastructure, and lack of sharia agreement (akad) from the shareholders and investor side remain become a challenge for the development of Sharia Fintech.
This matter was explained by Achmad Buchori, from the Advisory Strategic Committee and Research Center of the Indonesia Financial Service Authority (OJK), during a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Friday, August 8th, 2019, which organized by FEB UNS in collaboration with Bank Syariah Mandiri. He adds that, Sharia Fintech will develop along with the community understanding on halal concept.
On the other side, Erwin Haryono points out that there are many Fintech firms that are starting to undermine the banking institutions such as Alibaba with its Alipays, which can offer credits to MSMEs in China within only 4 (four) years of operation.
“Banks should transform to be a digital open banking,” he specifically states.
Aside from the two keynote speakers Achmad Bukhori and Erwin Haryono (Executive Director of Payment System Policy, Bank of Indonesia), the FGD also invite Iskandar Zulkarnain (member of the Republic Indonesia Hajj Financial Management Agency) and Dr. Irwan Trinugroho (FEB UNS academic staff).
