Management Study Program and the Master of Management Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a practitioner lecture themed “Safeguarding Project Success through Project Integrated Monitoring & Controlling” on Saturday, 6 December 2025, at the Suhardi Hall, FEB UNS. This activity formed part of the Operations Specialization Course and featured a professional practitioner to enrich students’ understanding of contemporary project management practices.

The speaker for this session was Edi Marwanto, Vice President of Business Development at PT National Energy Solutions, who has more than 20 years of experience in construction projects within the oil, gas, and petrochemical sectors. In his presentation, Edi Marwanto emphasized that projects do not merely produce unique deliverables, but also drive change and create value for organizations.

He explained that project failure is often caused by weak control processes, unmanaged changes, and inadequate monitoring of project performance. Data from The Standish Group indicate that large-budget projects face significant failure risks if they are not properly controlled.

The lecture then outlined core concepts in Project Management, including the Project Management Framework, Integrated Monitoring and Controlling, the role of the Project Management Office (PMO), and key recommendations for achieving project success.

The speaker described the comprehensive project life cycle, beginning with initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and concluding with closing. Each phase plays a critical role in ensuring that projects proceed in line with established plans.

The main section of the lecture highlighted the importance of Project Integrated Monitoring & Controlling, which encompasses scope control to prevent scope creep, project schedule control through baseline monitoring, cost control using CPI and CV indicators, quality control to ensure outputs meet specifications, as well as the management of risks, communication, resources, and stakeholders.

Edi introduced the application of Earned Value Management (EVM) as a highly effective method for assessing actual project performance and forecasting final project outcomes. The case studies presented demonstrated how EVM enables early identification of deviations, allowing project teams to design appropriate action plans.

The speaker emphasized the significance of a Project Management Office (PMO) as the center of organizational project governance. The PMO ensures strategic alignment, manages project business processes, develops human resource competencies, and facilitates knowledge transfer, enabling organizations to better manage the complexity of modern projects.

In closing, Edi Marwanto presented several key recommendations, including the adoption of global project management standards, stronger risk and change management practices, character-based leadership that includes emotional intelligence, and the application of the talent triangle for project managers, comprising technical, leadership, and strategic-business skills.

This practitioner lecture supports the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the enhancement of student competencies in project management. In addition, the emphasis on monitoring and controlling practices, project governance, and efficient resource utilization contributes to SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) through transparent, effective, and sustainable project management practices.

Master of Management (MM) Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), Surakarta, in collaboration with the Institutional and Financial Market Research Group (GRISKA), invited Assoc. Prof. Fakarudin Kamarudin, Ph.D., from Universiti Putra Malaysia. The Guest Lecture, titled “A Talk Session: How to Publish in Reputable Journals?” is conducted on Friday, 31 October 2025, at the Soedarah Soepono Building, FEB UNS.

Dr. Lilik Wahyudi, Head of the Master of Management Study Program FEB UNS, opens the session. In his remarks, Dr. Lilik states that the event forms part of the MM program’s agenda to accelerate student publications. “Yesterday we invited an expert in behavioral studies, and today we invited an expert in finance. Please explore the session thoroughly because Assoc. Prof. Fakarudin is an expert in finance,” said Dr. Lilik. He expresses hope that the session will support MM students in achieving successful international publications.

Starting his presentation, Assoc. Prof. Fakarudin explains that the first aspect to understand before pursuing publication is identifying the reason one needs to publish research. “We can consider this from two perspectives: the student’s perspective and the lecturer’s perspective. For students, publication is a graduation requirement. For lecturers, the main reason for publishing is related to KPI (Key Performance Indicator),” he explained.

He further emphasizes that beyond quality, authors should prepare manuscripts by considering three perspectives: the author, the reviewer, and the editor. From the author’s standpoint, key considerations include target, scope, and research team. Alignment between the research topic and the journal’s scope is necessary, as misalignment leads to desk rejection. On the other hand, from the reviewer’s perspective, different elements determine whether an article is suitable for publication. These include novelty (whether the issue presented is relevant and new), the content of the abstract (whether the research objective can be addressed by the chosen methodology), and the empirical analysis (econometrics and results).

“Meanwhile, for editors, there are three aspects they will consider: similarity, scope alignment, and novelty. Novelty is subjective and concerns new contributions. Its assessment depends on the editor of the journal,” explained Assoc. Prof. Fakarudin.

Assoc. Prof. Fakarudin also reminds participants to be cautious when using artificial intelligence (AI) and highlights the relevance of networking in the publication process. He shares several additional suggestions, including the importance of enhancing researcher visibility in their field of expertise. This visibility can be strengthened by attending international conferences. In addition, serving as a reviewer for reputable journals is an important step toward building professional networks.

The two-hour guest lecture concludes with an interactive discussion session between Assoc. Prof. Fakarudin and participants, most of whom are postgraduate students within FEB UNS.

This guest lecture supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, by strengthening the academic capacity of students and lecturers in reputable scholarly publication. It also supports Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals through international collaboration between FEB UNS and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) officially launched “Academic Handbook for Undergraduate, Master’s, and Doctoral Programs” on Friday, 3 October 2025. The event was conducted virtually and attended by all undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, as well as faculty members of FEB UNS.

In her remarks, Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs, Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., emphasized the significance of the session for students. The academic handbook serves as a primary reference to help students navigate their academic journey in a more structured and focused manner.

“There are two main objectives of this activity: improving the quality of graduates and enhancing the quality of curriculum and learning experiences. The academic and curricular information presented in this handbook will help students to graduate on time, acquire knowledge and skills relevant to the job market, and ensure a meaningful and enjoyable learning experience at FEB UNS,” she explained.

Prof. Tri further added that the handbook also provides a comprehensive understanding of academic regulations, including lecture procedures, scientific writing guidelines, and the stages of final project completion. With this information, students are expected to design more effective learning strategies, enabling them not only to graduate but also to gain competencies that are relevant to professional settings.

The handbook covers various essential aspects, including the vision and mission of UNS and FEB, organizational governance, academic regulations, curriculum, and supporting facilities. It is divided into three categories the Undergraduate Programs: Accounting, Management, Development Economics, and Digital Business. Master’s Programs covering the Master of Accounting (MAKSI), Master of Economics and Development Studies (MESP), and Master of Management (MM), and lastly the Doctoral Program in Economics (PDIE) with specializations in Accounting, Management, and Economics.

In addition to the launching session, the event also addressed the latest regulations regarding student internships. Vice Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs, Tastaftiyan Risfandy, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., explained that internships at FEB UNS are divided into two categories: compulsory internships and independent internships. The compulsory internship is part of the curriculum, worth 3 credits, and requires submission of a final report. Meanwhile, the independent internship is initiated by students, carries no credit load, and does not require reporting. Detailed information on internship programs is included in the Academic Handbook.

As a parallel session of the event, students participated in breakout room sessions led by each Head of Study Program. The Master of Management (MM) Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), held its New Student Orientation on Saturday, 30 August 2025, at Meeting Room 1, Soeharno TS Building, FEB UNS. The event, attended by 36 new MM students, served as an introduction to the curriculum, learning system, and academic direction.

In his presentation, Dr. Lilik Wahyudi, S.E., M.Si., Head of the MM Study Program, explained the implementation of Rector’s Regulation No. 20 of 2024, which stipulates that MM students will complete 56 credits across four semesters, including 26 thesis credits. In addition to the thesis examination, students are required to produce publications in nationally or internationally accredited journals, with a maximum similarity index of 25 percent (Turnitin).

One of the strategies introduced by the Head of the Study Program is the acceleration of scientific publications. Students are guided from the first semester through individual proposal writing. In the following semesters, the research is developed into a research report, transformed into a manuscript for publication in the third semester, and finally presented in a research seminar during the fourth semester. “We do not want you to spend too much time here; aim to finish within a maximum of two years,” he emphasized.

To support this target, students are provided with access to the EasyStudy MM UNS digital platform. A tiered thesis standard is also introduced, ranging from simple replication studies in Sinta-indexed journals to more complex research aimed at Q1–Q2 international journals.

Dr. Lilik emphasized that the orientation is not merely an introduction, but also a strategic direction. “We want MM students to realize from the very beginning that their academic journey does not stop at writing a thesis. You must be prepared to produce scientific works that can be published and make a broad impact, both nationally and internationally,” he said.

Through this structured curriculum designed to accelerate research and publication, the MM Study Program UNS is committed to producing graduates who not only complete their studies on time but are also productive in generating recognized scientific works. Following the strategic direction delivered by the Head of the MM Study Program, the event continued with a session on Strategies for On-Time Graduation at the Master’s Level, presented by Dr. I Made Bayu Dirgantara, S.E., M.M., lecturer at Universitas Diponegoro. This session provided guidance to new students on how to design effective academic strategies.

The program then proceeded with academic information delivered by Dyah Wasita Winahyu, S.E., Head of the Academic Subdivision FEB UNS, who outlined the academic and administrative regulations students must understand throughout their studies.

This activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by promoting inclusive and equitable learning, and SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, by encouraging innovation and research that contribute to sustainable economic development and the creation of decent employment opportunities. With this structured academic strategy, graduates of the MM Study Program FEB UNS are expected to become agents of change who support sustainable development at both the national and global levels.

The Master of Management (MM) Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), conducted a “Curriculum Development Workshop for the Master of Management Study Program” on September 27–28, 2024, at Bandungan.

The event featured two keynote speakers: Mirwan Surya Perdhana, S.E., M.M., Ph.D., Head of the MM Program at Universitas Diponegoro (UNDIP), and Prof. Dr. sc. Agr. Ir. Adi Ratriyanto, S.Pt., M.P., IPU., ASEAN Eng., a member of the drafting team for UNS Rector’s Regulations based on Permendikbudristek No. 53 of 2023. The workshop, attended by MM Program lecturers, was moderated by Wahyu Trinarningsih, S.E., M.M., M.A.

Dr. Retno Tanding Suryandari, S.E., M.E., Ph.D., who oversaw the event, emphasized that the MM Study Program must address a new regulation regarding curriculum adjustments, as stipulated in Permendikbudristek No. 53 of 2023, which is set to be implemented in 2025.

She noted that although the university has not yet issued derivative regulations based on the Ministry’s policy, the program invited the Head of the MM Program at UNDIP, as UNDIP has already implemented the regulation. Additionally, the event included Prof. Adi Ratriyanto, a team member responsible for drafting the university’s regulation aligned with the Ministry’s directive.

“The key issue is the increased credit requirements for the MM Program. Currently set at 36 credits, the new standard mandates a minimum of 54 and a maximum of 72 credits. One aspect highlighted is that mandatory dissemination of research publications will no longer be required. However, discussions at the university level suggest that UNS may still impose this requirement under specific conditions. With these additional credit requirements, discussions like this are essential,” she explained.

She further expressed hope that the discussions during the workshop would serve as a valuable resource as the MM Study Program prepares for reaccreditation, with its current accreditation expiring in November 2025. Dr. Retno added that initial data collection for the reaccreditation process has already begun and will be further managed by the newly appointed Head of the MM Program, Dr. Lilik Wahyudi, S.E., M.Si.

During the workshop, Prof. Adi Ratriyanto presented material on “Policy Directions for the Rector’s Regulation Draft for Master’s and Doctoral Programs,” while Mirwan Surya Perdhana, S.E., M.M., Ph.D., shared insights on the implementation of Permendikbudristek No. 53 of 2023 at UNDIP.

Participants were given the opportunity to engage in discussions with the speakers, exploring various aspects of the policy. In the evening, the event continued with a detailed discussion on the MM Study Program curriculum, led by Dr. Lilik Wahyudi, S.E., M.Si., the newly appointed Head of the MM Study Program for the 2024–2029 period.

The amicable relationship between the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), and its alumni has been notably strong, especially over the past two years. This bond is reflected in the establishment of the KAFEB Foundation and the initiation of an endowment fund known as ‘Watu Abadi’. Numerous alumni, including the 1989 cohort, have actively contributed at the Watu Abadi.

This statement was made by Dr. Dwi Prasetyani, SE. M.Si., Director of the Directorate of Alumni and Student Entrepreneurship at UNS, during the opening remarks of the Sharing Session titled “Balancing Corporate, Business, and People Development.” The event was hosted by the Master of Management (MM) Program FEB UNS on Saturday, September 21, 2024, in the Konimex Hall, Bachtiar Effendi Building.

Dr. Prasetyani further explained that scholarships provided by KAFEB have shown remarkable growth over the past two years. In its first year, the fund allocation stood at around IDR 24 million, which then increased significantly to IDR 184 million in the second year. These scholarships are awarded based on three criteria: financial need, academic achievement, and active involvement in campus activities.

In addition to KAFEB scholarships, there is also the “Bakti Almamater” program, which provides support for students through mentorship, job placements in state-owned enterprises, and opportunities in the banking sector. KAFEB provides mentoring and assistance starting from application to interview stages. Additionally, Bakti Almamater KAFEB also offers financial support for students participating in achievement-oriented activities.

“The Faculty highly appreciates and looks forward to further support from alumni. This support needs to be effectively communicated, thus, it can truly elevate FEB’s achievements, ultimately enhancing the faculty’s reputation nationally and internationally,” she explained.

Moreover, there is an additional fundraising initiative outside of KAFEB called “Gerbang Pitulungan,” donations specifically established by the alumni for student scholarships.

Dr. Prasetyani expressed her sincere gratitude and appreciation for the efforts of FEB UNS and KAFEB. “KAFEB UNS is a source of pride for us all. FEB is the only faculty at UNS with a dedicated foundation and endowment fund. Nationally, very few faculties have such resources. FEB UNS serves as a benchmark within UNS, setting an example for other faculties. Thank you to our alumni, who have shown exceptional commitment and integrity in supporting the advancement of FEB and UNS,” she concluded.

Meanwhile, the Dean of FEB UNS emphasized the importance of fostering a sense of belonging among alumni. Alumni who maintain a strong connection to their alma mater, and feel pride and respect for it, contribute to its enduring value.

“When alumni reach a certain point of success, our hope is that they remember their institution and recognize that it played a role in shaping them. The values and lessons learned at UNS hold lasting significance,” he added.

The Sharing Session featured three guest speakers from the 1989 alumni cohort: Heri Purnomo, Director of HR and General Affairs at PT Alumni; Eko Ariantoro, Chief Commissioner of PT. Elnusa; and Danang Andriyanto from Bank Mandiri. The event was moderated by Retno Tanding Suryandari, Ph.D., Head of the MM Program, and attended by undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students, as well as the alumni from 1989 cohort. The session was engaging and featured many door prizes for active participants.

New students in the Master of Management (MM) Program at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) participated in the program’s New Student Orientation, held on Saturday, August 31, 2024, at the Konimex Hall, Bachtiar Effendi Building, FEB UNS.

The orientation included an introduction to the program by the Head of Program and Academic Information from the Academic Sub-Coordinator, as well as presentations by both academic and industry professionals.

Speakers included Tri Mulyaningsih, Ph.D., and Dr. Nuryakin, who discussed academic writing techniques; Dr. Mulyanto and Dr. Roderikus Agus Trihatmoko, who focused on popular science writing; Suwarmin, MM., who covered Managerial Challenges; and Vika Laretha Dyahsasanti, S.E., who presented on Digital Literacy.

Interim Vice Dean for Academic Research and Student Affairs at FEB UNS, Dr. Dwi Prasetyani, S.E., M.Si., opened the online session by warmly welcoming the new students and congratulating them on joining the MM program.

“Congratulations! You are part of a select group. Many desire admission to the MM Program, and you have been accepted. At the university level, our MM program is one of the most sought-after, with a highly competitive admission process,” she shared.

Dr. Dwi emphasized the program’s four-semester duration, advising students to stay focused and aim for timely graduation. She acknowledged that some postgraduate students find the publication requirement challenging, but assured that thorough preparation from the beginning would make it manageable. She stressed the importance of planning.

“We are confident you will achieve all of this, and we hope you will excel, both as individuals and as representatives of FEB. We encourage you to actively publish and engage in academic activities,” she addressed the 44 new students in attendance.

New students, she added, are essential in advancing knowledge and contributing to the future growth of FEB. MM Program Head, Retno Tanding Suryandari, Ph.D., also extended her welcome to the new MM students.

According to her, the orientation aims to ensure students have a clear understanding of the program’s academic flow and know what they need to accomplish to graduate from the MM Program. The orientation was thoughtfully designed to be engaging and informative.

Dr. Retno further detailed the MM Program profile, including its vision and mission, faculty, curriculum, facilities, extracurricular activities, and partnership programs. The MM curriculum is designed to allow students to complete their studies within four semesters, provided they stay motivated and focused. The program offers various facilities to support students’ learning experiences.

“To complete the program, students must earn 36 credits, including core courses, elective courses, and thesis writing.
