Master in Economics and Development Study Program (MESP), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a strategic workshop titled “Designing Impactful Policy Briefs for Public Policy Making” on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Held at the Bachtiar Effendi Building, FEB UNS, the event was attended by the faculty members of FEB UNS, MESP students, and representatives from the Solo City Government, Sragen Regency Government, and Wonogiri Regency Government. In his opening remarks, Prof. Suryanto, the Head of the MESP Study Program, expressed his pride in the continuous consistency of academic programs implemented at FEB UNS. Previously, MESP had successfully organized an Environmental Economics workshop featuring a speaker from UGM.

Looking ahead, Prof. Suryanto announced the next major agenda scheduled for June 15–16, 2026. The two-day agenda will focus on Green Economics development, which will later be integrated into a diploma supplement certificate or SKPI (Surat Keterangan Pendamping Ijazah). Master’s students, particularly from MESP, are requested to register immediately.

Regarding the workshop, Prof. Suryanto emphasized the importance of mastering policy brief writing for both academics and government practitioners in Solo, Sragen, and Wonogiri. “We hope there will be a follow-up to this activity, in line with the guidance and high expectations of the Vice Dean. We ask for serious participation from all faculty members and students. If approved in the future, we plan to make this policy brief one of the options to replace the thesis requirement for master’s students,” Prof. Suryanto stated.

As an introduction to the material, Dr. Erda Rindrasih, S.Si., MURP, the speaker from Universitas Gadjah Mada, explained that policy is essentially a decision. Quoting an adage, “policy is whatever government chooses to do or not to do. It is what government does.” She reminded participants to be capable of mapping issues into their proper levels: operational, technical, strategic, political, and ethical levels that extend beyond politics.

“We must learn to find solutions according to the scale of the problem. We often get caught up arguing over minor operational things, such as the issue of maggots found in the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, when the problem might actually lie at the technical supply chain level, a faulty strategic design from the start, or even within the budgeting (political) realm. Do not let the issue be operational but the solution political. Do not swat a mosquito with a nuclear bomb,” Dr. Erda asserted. She also illustrated how ethical aspects pose complex global challenges due to differences in values across regions or countries, such as views on LGBT, which are accepted abroad but remain unaccepted in Indonesia.

Principles of a Policy Brief: A Light Read Over a Cup of Coffee

Furthermore, Dr. Erda corrected a common misconception in the field where the term policy brief is often interchanged with a policy paper, policy essay, or policy article. A policy brief has highly specific characteristics: concise (4 to a maximum of 8 pages), packaged lightly so that it can be read in just 5 to 7 minutes over a cup of coffee, and written in non-specialist language that is easily understood by a middle school student without complicated foreign jargon.

To compose a good policy brief, Dr. Erda invited participants to practice structured thinking through a case simulation on pharmaceutical independence:

  1. Understanding Strategic Issues: Listing crucial problems on the surface. For example, high dependency on imported raw materials prevents the national pharmaceutical industry from being independent, meaning that if fuel prices (Pertalite/Pertamax) rise, the price of local medicine is vulnerable to impacts and struggles to compete with imported drugs.
  2. Shifting to the Root Cause: Discovering the fundamental reasons behind the issue, such as unaligned regulations or suboptimal government budget support.
  3. Formulating Recommendations: Generating systematic, evidence-based arguments to serve as tools for public policy advocacy.

Supporting SDG Attainment

Through concrete outputs in the form of draft policy briefs from the attending faculty members, students, researchers, and regional practitioners, this initiative by FEB UNS directly contributes to supporting the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is particularly evident in SDG Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being through independence in the health and pharmaceutical sectors), SDG Goal 4 (Quality Education), and SDG Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through close collaboration between university academics and local governments (Solo City Government, Sragen Regency Government, and Wonogiri Regency Government).

Master in Economics and Development Study Program (MESP) at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a training session on the Application of Geographic Information System (GIS) in Economic Research on Wednesday (13/5/2026) at the Teleconference Room, Soedarah Soepono Building, FEB UNS. The event was attended by MESP FEB UNS students and featured Dr. Fafurida, S.E., M.Sc., as the main speaker.

The Head of the Master in Economics and Development Study Program at FEB UNS, Suryanto, stated in his opening remarks that this activity serves as an advanced workshop to expand students’ understanding of spatial approaches in economic research.

He also expressed his appreciation to Dr. Fafurida for returning to FEB UNS to share her experience and insights regarding spatial research. “Thank you, and welcome back to the UNS campus. Having previously delivered material on GIS, she has returned to our campus to share her experience and knowledge with the students,” he remarked.

According to Prof. Suryanto, the MESP FEB UNS Study Program intends to encourage the development of research methods that focus not only on conventional econometric approaches but also utilize spatial approaches, which are increasingly relevant in regional development studies.

“In the MESP Study Program, we want research activities to look beyond traditional analytical tools such as econometrics. Spatial approaches also need to be studied because they provide a more comprehensive perspective when analyzing development phenomena,” he explained.

He expressed his aspiration that the training would provide practical insights for students in composing high-quality research papers and scientific articles with strong publication potential. “Through this activity, hopefully students can acquire tips and tricks in creating good research and scientific articles, including understanding publication opportunities for their research outcomes,” he added.

During the training session, Dr. Fafurida delivered material regarding the utilization of Geographic Information System (GIS) in development economics research, covering basic concepts of GIS, spatial data, spatial analysis techniques, and the integration of GIS with spatial econometrics. She explained that development is fundamentally a spatially-dimensioned phenomenon; therefore, economic analysis requires a spatial perspective to generate policies that are more accurately targeted. She emphasized that development inequality, public service accessibility, and the concentration of economic activities possess a close relationship with the geographical location of a region.

The material also discussed various spatial analysis techniques such as spatial autocorrelation, kernel density estimation (KDE), overlay analysis, buffer analysis, and network analysis, which can be applied to research on poverty, regional inequality, infrastructure accessibility, tourism village development, and MSME concentrations.

In addition to the conceptual presentations, participants were introduced to various case studies regarding the application of GIS in development economics, such as tourism village mapping, tourism cluster analysis, regional development planning, and accessibility-based development priority mapping combined with economic indicators.

This activity is part of FEB UNS’s commitment to enhancing student research quality through multidisciplinary and spatial data-based approaches, while supporting the expansion of research that is highly applicable to regional development policy formulation. The training also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 regarding Quality Education, Goal 9 regarding Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and Goal 11 regarding Sustainable Cities and Communities.

Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), held a Preliminary Discussion of the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) Curriculum for the Master’s Program in Economics and Development Studies (MESP) on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the Project-Based Learning (PBL) Laboratory, Soedarah Soepono Building, FEB UNS.

The session was opened by Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs of FEB UNS, and attended by Prof. Dr. Suryanto, S.E., M.Si., Head of the MESP Program; Prof. Dr. Sarwanto, S.Pd., M.Si., Head of the Institute for Educational Development and Quality Assurance (LPPMP) UNS, who were attending the session virtually, as well as lecturers of the MESP Program.

In her remarks, Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih explained that the discussion marked an important step in facilitating the MESP Program’s preparation to launch its RPL track. She stated, “RPL is the acknowledgment of learning outcomes acquired through prior professional experience. FEB has gained experience in managing RPL at the undergraduate level, such as in the Accounting Study Program that admitted students from the Financial and Development Supervisory Board (BPKP). For the master’s level, we are designing an RPL model based on credit recognition through professional portfolios rather than mere credit transfers.”

She further explained that RPL offers extensive potential for collaboration with government agencies and professional institutions. Through RPL, study programs can attract practitioners with relevant experience, thereby not only increasing student enrollment but also enriching academic interaction in the classroom.

“The development of RPL should not only be viewed from an academic standpoint but also from the perspective of program efficiency. Some programs still face challenges in student enrollment. With RPL, we hope to enhance program attractiveness, expand collaborative networks, and make the curriculum more aligned with labor market needs,” she added.

Meanwhile, Prof. Dr. Suryanto, S.E., M.Si., Head of the MESP Program, noted that this discussion is part of the curriculum renewal effort to strengthen the competitiveness of the master’s programs within FEB UNS. He stated, “We are still lagging behind the Master of Management Program in terms of student admission. Therefore, in addition to the existing regular and fast-track programs, RPL provides an important alternative for prospective students who already possess professional experience and competencies.”

He added that the RPL model in MESP will open opportunities for graduates from both Economics and non-Economics undergraduate programs with at least three years of work experience, particularly in planning, public policy, or regional economics. Through an assessment and portfolio-based mechanism, participants’ professional experiences will be recognized as part of their learning outcomes in accordance with academic standards.

The interactive discussion also received substantive input from LPPMP UNS regarding academic governance and administrative requirements for RPL, including registration criteria, credit recognition procedures, and portfolio verification processes.

Through this curriculum draft discussion, the MESP Program is expected to open the RPL track in the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The program aims to expand access to higher education for professionals while contributing to the enhancement of human resource capacity in economic planning and policy development.

This initiative aligns with FEB UNS’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education through inclusive learning access and recognition of non-formal education, and SDG 8 on Decent Work and Economic Growth through the advancement of professional capacity in public and development economics sectors.

Writing papers for publication in reputable international journals is a crucial skill for academics, especially MESP students. This process not only requires authors to clearly convey their findings, but also requires them to meet the quality standards set by the journal to which they submit the article. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the structure and important elements in academic writing is the key to producing acceptable papers.

Monday, July 29, 2024, at the Bachtiar Effendi Building Teleconferencing Room, MESP invited Dr. Suziana Hasan, a lecturer from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, as a keynote speaker at a workshop entitled “How to Write an Outstanding Manuscript for A Reputable Publication.”

On this occasion, Dr. Suziana introduced several reputable international journals such as Scopus, Elsevier, Web of Science, and Springer. Further, she mentioned that in preparing a good paper, the article must be prepared in accordance with the format determined by each journal; negligence in preparing the article can be one of the reasons for reviewers to reject our paper. An AI-assisted paper writing is common nowadays, but the author must maintain due diligence and be careful in understanding the results provided by AI. This will ensure that the article content remains in accordance with the desired purpose and maintains the originality of the writing.

Additionally, before the paper is sent, it is important that the author proofreads to ensure that there are no errors in both writing and research content. Another suggestion is to include a cover letter during submission, allowing the editor of the journal to briefly understand the submitted paper and understand the reason the paper deserves to be published in the journal.

In determining the research problems, Dr. Suziana states that it is possible to draw from the limitations of previous research, where the research topic selected is expected to have the potential to make significant contributions to the community. Afterward, it is advised that the title of the article should not exceed 10 words, thus, it will be interesting to read. Further, the abstract of an article usually consisted of between 150-200 words. This section includes background, problem formulation, objectives, methods, results, suggestions, implications, and limitations (make an effort to reveal the implementation of the results of the research in other countries or research).

At the end of the presentation, Dr. Suziana did not forget to provide motivation to participants, especially to students who were still in the process of preparing theses and journal articles, to remain enthusiastic about writing and contributing to the development of empirical research.

Joint Supervision is a program that provides a space for selected students to prepare their final assignments, supervised directly by lecturers from universities abroad. Ainina Ratnadewati is one of the students of the Master of Economics and Development Studies (MESP) Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) who had the opportunity to participate in the program.

The thesis preparation conducted by Ainina was directly supervised by Associate Professor Dr. Norlida Hanim Binti Mohd Salled as a lecturer from the Faculty of Economics, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. On Monday, July 29, 2024, a thesis proposal seminar was held as one of a series of Joint Supervision activities that directly invited supervisors from the National University of Malaysia.

On this occasion, Ainina presented a research proposal entitled “Implementation of Circular Economy as a Solution to Waste Problems in Traders in Prambanan Temple Tourism Park: Multi-Analysis Approach.”

The event was attended by students from several cross-majors, namely the Economics and Agribusiness Study Program at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. Throughout the seminar, both participants and supervisors, especially Associate Professor Dr. Norlida Hanim Binti Mohd Salled provided numerous suggestions to produce a quality final project.

In the long term, this initiative is expected to attract more FEB UNS students and motivate them to participate in this Joint Supervision Program, improving relations with international university partners while improving the quality of students’ writing, particularly during their final project.
