Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), welcomed a benchmarking visit from the Accounting Study Program of Campus UNESA 5, Universitas Negeri Surabaya (UNESA), on Thursday, 22 January 2026. The visit took place at the Fiscal Corner Room, Soeharno TS Building, FEB UNS. The activity aimed to strengthen academic governance, enhance study program quality, and expand institutional networks and collaboration among higher education institutions.

The UNESA delegation was received directly by the Dean of FEB UNS, Prof. Bhimo Rizky Samudro, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D. The benchmarking session was attended by the leadership team of FEB UNS and faculty members from the Accounting Study Program FEB UNS.

In his remarks, Prof. Bhimo stated that the benchmarking visit represented a valuable momentum, particularly in light of the development and opening of new study programs at FEB UNS. He emphasized that differences in institutional character and academic orientation should be viewed as complementary strengths rather than barriers.

“When we received the letter from UNESA, we had just opened a new study program. I believe this is a valuable opportunity. Although our institutional bases differ, where UNESA has a strong foundation in education, this is precisely where we can learn a great deal, particularly in teaching practices,” he explained.

He further elaborated that UNESA’s established educational systems, curriculum development frameworks, and instructional methodologies could serve as important references for FEB UNS. Conversely, FEB UNS is equally open to sharing best practices in academic governance and study program development.

Prof. Bhimo also noted that collaboration could be implemented gradually, either partially or at the study program level. Potential areas for cooperation include the management of scientific journals, the development of international classes, and the implementation of Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) schemes.

In the subsequent session, the Head of the Undergraduate Accounting Study Program at FEB UNS, Prof. Doddy Setiawan, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Ak., delivered a comprehensive presentation on the profile and management of the Accounting Study Program. His presentation covered curriculum structure, learning systems, academic governance, as well as various innovations and development initiatives undertaken by the program. The session facilitated an interactive discussion and exchange of best practices between FEB UNS and the Undergraduate Accounting Study Program of UNESA.

Through this benchmarking activity, both institutions are expected to foster sustained synergy and collaboration in enhancing the quality of higher education, particularly in the field of accounting.

This initiative also supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), through strengthened academic quality and inter-institutional collaboration in higher education.

He further stated, “We hope you can understand that both qualitative and quantitative approaches are equally important. Each offers a different perspective, but together they provide a more complete picture. Hopefully, this activity will help students complete their studies on time and even publish reputable publications, such as those indexed in Sinta 2 or Scopus.”

Prof. Doddy further highlighted how important it is to have an early preparation in research to avoid rushed thesis writing. He noted, “We hope this event serves as a milestone for students to begin their research properly and to produce high-quality academic work.”

Sustainability refers to a business’s ability to maintain operations while generating economic profit. The topic of sustainability has become increasingly relevant, especially in relation to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Responding to this, the Accounting Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) organized a general lecture on sustainability.

The lecture, entitled “Positioning Business Sustainability,” was conducted virtually on Wednesday, 3 September 2025, featuring Prof. Hooy Chee Wooi from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). In his presentation, Prof. Hooy discussed the objectives of business activities, the necessary steps to ensure business sustainability, and how to position the sustainability concept within a business.

Opening the event, Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs of FEB UNS, warmly welcomed the lecture. She emphasized that discussions on sustainability are essential, as many sectors in business, economics, and finance are now required to report on their sustainability practices. “This is a very engaging and important topic for students to learn how to position business sustainability. We extend our gratitude to Prof. Hooy for sharing his insights, and we hope this discussion will be beneficial for all participants,” said Prof. Tri.

Beyond sustainability, Prof. Hooy also elaborated on the fundamental activities of business, describing it as a process aimed at generating economic profit, including production, sales, and the exchange of goods and services to meet customer needs. “Business involves many parts and roles. To achieve success, a company must have good planning, effective management, market knowledge, and the ability to adapt,” explained Prof. Hooy.

He further outlined strategies for ensuring business sustainability, which include clear business planning, strong financial management, market understanding, adaptability, flexibility, and investment in talent and organizational culture. With technological advancement, businesses also need to adopt automation and data-driven decision-making. Additional measures include risk management, maintaining a solid customer base, market growth, strong governance, and strategic collaboration.

According to Prof. Hooy, profitability is the foundation of business sustainability. Once profitability is secured, compliance with laws becomes critical, followed by adherence to ESG (environmental, social, and governance), CSR (corporate social responsibility), SDGs, and ethics.

“From the producer’s perspective, business sustainability means surviving in the long term. From the customer’s perspective, it refers to long-term value creation. Balancing both requires businesses to deliver long-term value to stakeholders, communities, and the environment by integrating environmental, social, and governance considerations into strategy, operations, and decision-making,” he noted.

Concluding the lecture, Prof. Hooy highlighted that businesses today should not merely follow the principle of “doing good by doing well,” but rather shift to “doing well by doing good.”

By offering in-depth discussions on positioning business sustainability, this general lecture directly supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Business sustainability, which goes beyond profit and incorporates ESG aspects, aligns with the SDGs’ objectives of promoting inclusive economic growth, environmental protection, and social well-being. Through the understanding and application of these concepts, students and business practitioners are expected to contribute actively to sustainable development that balances profitability with social and environmental responsibility.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), held a Workshop on the Integration of Merdeka Belajar Kampus Merdeka (MBKM), Internship, and Community Service (KKN) on Thursday, July 10, 2025, at UNS Inn. The event was attended by Undergraduate Study Program Heads, Heads of Academic Subdivisions, Academic Staff and Operators, as well as the Personnel in Charge for the Internship at Study Program level. The workshop aims to build a common understanding and formulate guidelines for the implementation of internships and KKN within FEB UNS, in line with the latest policy of the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.

In her opening remarks, Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Dean of Academic and Research Affairs, emphasized that internships are one of the key components of MBKM Program, yet varying interpretations and inconsistent information still remain. The shift in terminology and scheme, such as from “MBKM Internship” to “Impactful Internship,” requires adjustments in governance and policies both at the faculty and study program levels.

This initiative is a joint-effort undertaken by the Academic Affairs Division (Division 1) and the Student and Alumni Affairs Division (Third Division). In its presentation, the Division highlighted the importance of structuring mandatory internships, which apply generally to all study programs and must be reported to each program. On the other hand, there are also independently managed internships by students within the MBKM framework, now known as Impactful Internships.

“With this workshop, we hope to establish a common understanding among the faculties and study program administrators regarding the forms, procedures, and governance of internships and KKN. In addition, this activity also serves as a starting point for drafting internship implementation guidelines that align with the latest regulations,” said Prof. Tri.

It is important to understand that the current implementation of internships refers to Ministerial Regulation (Permendikbudristek) No. 63 of 2024 on the Implementation of Student Internships. FEB UNS, through Division 3, is committed to preparing and launching the Internship Handbook in the near future. One of the key discussions was the positioning and relationship between Mandatory Internships, MBKM Internships, and Impactful Internships within the curriculum structure and academic policies.

The discussion managed to establish that although terminology and implementation platforms have changed, both the MBKM Internships and Impactful Internships share similarities, particularly in providing opportunities for students to engage in off-campus activities for up to two semesters. Through this workshop, FEB UNS seeks to ensure that the future implementation of internships and KKN can be carried out in an integrated and effective manner, in accordance with student learning needs and the dynamics of national policies.

This workshop is also aligned with FEB UNS’s commitment to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), by strengthening curricula based on real-world and community experiences; SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), by preparing students with work readiness and skills relevant to industry needs; and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals), by fostering collaboration between universities, businesses, government, and communities in the implementation of internships, KKN, and other MBKM programs.

With a more structured and impactful integration of MBKM, internships, and KKN, FEB UNS hopes to produce graduates who are not only academically excellent but also adaptive, collaborative, and capable of making tangible contributions to sustainable development at the local, national, and global levels.

The Accounting Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on curriculum review, Friday, July 18, 2025, at UNS Tower. The event featured two speakers, Dr. Luluk Widyawati, S.E., M.Bus., Ph.D., CSRA., CSRS., Head of the Accounting Study Program at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Indonesia, and Rayenda Khresna Brahmana, Ph.D., Coventry University, UK.

Head of the Accounting Study Program at FEB UNS, Prof. Doddy Setiawan, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., delivered a welcoming speech to all Accounting lecturers in attendance and expressed his gratitude to the two speakers for their willingness to share knowledge and experience. “We sincerely thank both speakers for dedicating their time to contribute to this forum. Hopefully, this activity will provide great benefits for all of us,” he stated.

The session was moderated by Isna Putri Rahmawati, S.E., M.Sc., Ak., a lecturer of the Accounting Study Program at FEB UNS, who explained that the curriculum reconstruction is a regular initiative aimed at aligning the curriculum with the evolving needs of stakeholders as well as advances in accounting knowledge.

“We look forward to receiving insights from the speakers and all workshop participants on how to develop a curriculum that is relevant to current conditions and beneficial for our graduates. Therefore, we kindly ask for active participation in reviewing the existing curriculum of the Accounting Study Program at UNS, while also gaining best practices from the Undergraduate Accounting Study Program at Universitas Indonesia,” she explained.

The discussion then continued with a presentation by Dr. Luluk Widyawati, who outlined that the curriculum review process involves three main stages: defining the Learning Outcomes (CPL), translating the CPL into courses and determining credit weight (SKS), and further detailing CPL and courses into structured learning processes for each session. “These three stages serve as the basis for evaluating the existing curriculum and for developing the Undergraduate Accounting curriculum at Universitas Indonesia,” said Dr. Luluk.

The agenda proceeded with a curriculum review session by Rayenda Khresna Brahmana. After both reviews, the event continued with a discussion and Q&A session between participants and speakers, providing deeper insights and constructive feedback for the curriculum development.

This curriculum reconstruction also aligns with UNS’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on Quality Education. The Accounting Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Sebelas Maret (FEB UNS), organized an Academic Orientation for new students for the Joint-Partnership Class between UNS and the Financial and Development Supervisory Agency (BPKP). The event took place at Konimex Hall, FEB UNS, on Thursday, 21st August, 2025, and was attended by 90 BPKP students. This orientation aims to provide an initial understanding of academic processes, the learning system, and strategic policies applied throughout the study period. Students were also introduced to the academic information system and various opportunities for academic development.

Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs, in her remarks, highlighted the national and international accreditations achieved by FEB UNS, including “Unggul (Superior)” accreditation from LAMEMBA and international accreditation from AQAS. She also noted that FEB UNS is in the process of pursuing accreditation from the world’s prestigious body, AACSB.

She further explained the technical aspects of the lectures, which will begin on 25 August 2025, and emphasized the requirement of at least 75% attendance as a prerequisite for participating in evaluations. Students were reminded to promptly access the Academic Information System (SIAKAD) to complete their course registration (KRS) and ensure validation by their academic advisor. Regarding the curriculum, FEB UNS has adopted the Outcome-Based Education (OBE) approach. Unlike the previous system, which focused mainly on midterm and final exams, assessments now include case studies, projects, or other methods aligned with course learning outcomes. The learning process spans 16 meetings, with a minimum of two assessments.

Dr. Sutaryo, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Ak., CA., CRA., CRP., ACPA, Vice Dean for Non-Academic Affairs, expressed his appreciation for the achievements of the new students admitted through the collaboration with BPKP. He encouraged students to take full advantage of this opportunity, both academically and in personal development.

Meanwhile, the Head of the Undergraduate Accounting Study Program, Prof. Doddy Setiawan, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., Ak., explained that the study program offers an academic incentive in the form of exemption from the thesis examination for students who successfully publish their scientific work in reputable journals, at least SINTA 2. However, students are still required to write a thesis as part of their academic process. He also explained that from the second semester, students will begin taking Research Methodology courses and start engaging in discussions with lecturers. By the third semester, they may choose a supervisor to guide them in preparing their thesis proposal.

Prof. Doddy emphasized the importance of completing the program on time and making optimal use of the two-year study period. He noted that FEB UNS is currently ranked within the top 300–400 in the world for the field of accounting, supported by eight professors actively involved in teaching and student supervision.

As part of the orientation process, the session continued with an academic lecture titled “Emerging Research in Public Sector Accounting” delivered by Prof. Dra. Y. Anni Aryani, M.Prof. Acc., Ph.D., Ak., CA. The lecture provided students with an initial perspective on the importance of research in accountable and transparent public sector governance.

This orientation supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through curriculum enhancement, academic mentoring by professors, and research incentives. It also contributes to SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions) by strengthening competencies in public sector accounting and financial supervision, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through strategic collaboration between universities and government institutions, in this case, between UNS and BPKP.
