A total of 18 students from the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), participated in the Short-Term International Mobility Program at the Faculty of Business and Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Selangor, Malaysia, from June 2 to 6, 2026. The international experience gained by the students encompassed not only classroom lectures but also various academic and cultural activities. During their stay at UiTM Malaysia, the students engaged in management discussions, collaborative lectures delivered by FEB UNS and UiTM faculty members, international seminars, skill development workshops, introductions to Malaysian culture, and an industrial visit to Beryl’s Chocolate Factory in Selangor. For postgraduate students, this program also provided an opportunity to conduct research consultations with UiTM academics.

This program is part of FEB UNS’s commitment to broadening students’ international exposure while simultaneously elevating graduate competitiveness at the global level. The Vice Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs of FEB UNS, Tastaftiyan Risfandy, S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D., stated that FEB UNS students possess excellent academic potential. Therefore, the faculty strives to provide additional experiences that can reinforce their competencies outside the classroom.

“FEB has highly intelligent students who possess strong academic capabilities. In order to expand their skills, enhance their exposure, and boost their competitiveness beyond our campus, the faculty decided to establish a program enabling them to gain international exposure outside Indonesia,” he remarked.

According to Tastaftiyan, international experience has become increasingly important amidst evolving global challenges. Students need to become accustomed to interacting in multicultural environments and utilizing English in various academic and professional activities.

“To face a future driven by globalization and international competition, they must be familiar with English. Thus, we prepare our students from the Faculty of Economics and Business to gain exposure at the international level,” he explained.

“To face a future driven by globalization and international competition, they must be familiar with English. Thus, we prepare our students from the Faculty of Economics and Business to gain exposure at the international level,” he explained.

“They have to speak with them in English, try to interact, and perhaps when given certain assignments, there are negotiation skills they can also learn. I believe those are some of the many benefits they can obtain when participating in student mobility in Malaysia,” he said.

Furthermore, he emphasized that internationalization is an inseparable part of FEB UNS’s development direction. International student mobility programs have been implemented sustainably and align with university-wide policies. “Students undertaking international mobility is not unique to this year. In previous years, we have aligned our initiatives with the university. Last year, we sent two students to France for student mobility, whereas this year, we chose to focus on Asia by sending 18 students to Malaysia,” he revealed.

The partnership between FEB UNS and UiTM Malaysia itself has been established for several years through various higher education tridarma (three pillars) activities. Faculty members from both institutions regularly engage in teaching activities at each other’s campuses as a form of sustainable academic collaboration. In 2026, this cooperation was expanded through the student mobility program. According to Tastaftiyan, FEB UNS students received various facilities during the program at UiTM as a form of support from the international partner.

Beyond benefiting the students, this program also supports the strengthening of FEB UNS’s international network. Currently, FEB UNS maintains partnership networks with various institutions across Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

“One of the reasons we pursue internationalization is that we are currently striving for an international accreditation, namely AACSB. One of the prerequisites is that elements of the institution, both faculty members and students, must have active engagements with partners abroad,” he explained.

Through this initiative, FEB UNS hopes that students can gain valuable global experience while strengthening the faculty’s position as an educational institution that actively builds international collaborations. The presence of FEB UNS students at UiTM Malaysia marks a concrete step toward producing graduates who are ready to compete internationally. This initiative supports SDG 4 (Quality Education) by improving the quality of experiential, international-based learning, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) by strengthening higher education partnerships between FEB UNS and UiTM Malaysia.

Master in Economics and Development Study Program (MESP), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a strategic workshop titled “Designing Impactful Policy Briefs for Public Policy Making” on Thursday, June 11, 2026. Held at the Bachtiar Effendi Building, FEB UNS, the event was attended by the faculty members of FEB UNS, MESP students, and representatives from the Solo City Government, Sragen Regency Government, and Wonogiri Regency Government. In his opening remarks, Prof. Suryanto, the Head of the MESP Study Program, expressed his pride in the continuous consistency of academic programs implemented at FEB UNS. Previously, MESP had successfully organized an Environmental Economics workshop featuring a speaker from UGM.

Looking ahead, Prof. Suryanto announced the next major agenda scheduled for June 15–16, 2026. The two-day agenda will focus on Green Economics development, which will later be integrated into a diploma supplement certificate or SKPI (Surat Keterangan Pendamping Ijazah). Master’s students, particularly from MESP, are requested to register immediately.

Regarding the workshop, Prof. Suryanto emphasized the importance of mastering policy brief writing for both academics and government practitioners in Solo, Sragen, and Wonogiri. “We hope there will be a follow-up to this activity, in line with the guidance and high expectations of the Vice Dean. We ask for serious participation from all faculty members and students. If approved in the future, we plan to make this policy brief one of the options to replace the thesis requirement for master’s students,” Prof. Suryanto stated.

As an introduction to the material, Dr. Erda Rindrasih, S.Si., MURP, the speaker from Universitas Gadjah Mada, explained that policy is essentially a decision. Quoting an adage, “policy is whatever government chooses to do or not to do. It is what government does.” She reminded participants to be capable of mapping issues into their proper levels: operational, technical, strategic, political, and ethical levels that extend beyond politics.

“We must learn to find solutions according to the scale of the problem. We often get caught up arguing over minor operational things, such as the issue of maggots found in the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, when the problem might actually lie at the technical supply chain level, a faulty strategic design from the start, or even within the budgeting (political) realm. Do not let the issue be operational but the solution political. Do not swat a mosquito with a nuclear bomb,” Dr. Erda asserted. She also illustrated how ethical aspects pose complex global challenges due to differences in values across regions or countries, such as views on LGBT, which are accepted abroad but remain unaccepted in Indonesia.

Principles of a Policy Brief: A Light Read Over a Cup of Coffee

Furthermore, Dr. Erda corrected a common misconception in the field where the term policy brief is often interchanged with a policy paper, policy essay, or policy article. A policy brief has highly specific characteristics: concise (4 to a maximum of 8 pages), packaged lightly so that it can be read in just 5 to 7 minutes over a cup of coffee, and written in non-specialist language that is easily understood by a middle school student without complicated foreign jargon.

To compose a good policy brief, Dr. Erda invited participants to practice structured thinking through a case simulation on pharmaceutical independence:

  1. Understanding Strategic Issues: Listing crucial problems on the surface. For example, high dependency on imported raw materials prevents the national pharmaceutical industry from being independent, meaning that if fuel prices (Pertalite/Pertamax) rise, the price of local medicine is vulnerable to impacts and struggles to compete with imported drugs.
  2. Shifting to the Root Cause: Discovering the fundamental reasons behind the issue, such as unaligned regulations or suboptimal government budget support.
  3. Formulating Recommendations: Generating systematic, evidence-based arguments to serve as tools for public policy advocacy.

Supporting SDG Attainment

Through concrete outputs in the form of draft policy briefs from the attending faculty members, students, researchers, and regional practitioners, this initiative by FEB UNS directly contributes to supporting the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is particularly evident in SDG Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-Being through independence in the health and pharmaceutical sectors), SDG Goal 4 (Quality Education), and SDG Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through close collaboration between university academics and local governments (Solo City Government, Sragen Regency Government, and Wonogiri Regency Government).

The Fiscal Corner at the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a Fiscal Outlook Series carrying the theme “Strait of Hormuz Impact: Regional Fiscal Resilience Strategies & Alternative Financing Transformation” on Tuesday (9/6/2026). Hosted from the UNS Tower Classroom, the event featuring Dr. Subandono, S.E., M.Sc., Director of the Financial Balance System at the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Indonesia as the keynote speaker.

The agenda was attended by undergraduate and postgraduate students, alumni, and faculty members who enthusiastically participated in discussions regarding the impact of global geopolitical dynamics on the regional economy and fiscal conditions. This forum serves as a dialogue space between practitioners and academics to comprehend both challenges and opportunities in fiscal management amidst global uncertainty.

The Dean of FEB UNS, Prof. Bhimo Rizky Samudro, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., expressed his appreciation in his opening remarks for the presence of Dr. Subandono, who was willing to share knowledge and experiences with the students and attendees. According to Prof. Bhimo, the selected theme is highly relevant to various issues studied in development economics and fiscal policy. He noted that the presence of a practitioner from the Ministry of Finance provides a more comprehensive perspective on how the government manages fiscal policy when facing various global challenges.

“It is an honor for us to bring the Director of the Financial Balance System from the Ministry of Finance to share insights with students and alumni. Activities like this are essential to bring together academic perspectives with the policy practices implemented by the government,” he remarked.

Prof. Bhimo also hoped that the Fiscal Outlook Series would continue as a regular discussion forum featuring strategic issues in the fiscal and regional development sectors. He emphasized that the Fiscal Corner is part of the laboratory ecosystem and center for scientific development at FEB UNS that supports the improvement of educational quality, research, and collaboration with various partners.

Meanwhile, during his presentation, Dr. Subandono explained that current global economic conditions are still influenced by various geopolitical uncertainties, including dynamics in the Strait of Hormuz region, which carry implications for the economic and fiscal stability of various nations. He emphasized the importance of synergy between the central and regional governments to maintain fiscal resilience and ensure that development continues in a sustainable manner. The problem might occur over there, but the impact can reach here at Indonesia, even Solo. For this reason, the central government and local governments must establish and maintain better synergy in responding to various emerging challenges.

In his presentation, Dr. Subandono explained that Indonesia requires high and consistent economic growth to escape the middle-income trap. Amidst various global shocks, Indonesia’s economy has shown a relatively good performance, with economic growth remaining stable and inflation remaining controlled. He also highlighted the significant role of the state budget (APBN) and regional budgets (APBD) as fiscal decentralization instruments capable of supporting equitable development and public services in various regions. Furthermore, he explained that fiscal transfers to regions are designed to reduce fiscal disparities, enhance the quality of public services, and support the achievement of national development priorities. According to him, strengthening regional fiscal capacity relies not only on transfers from the central government but also on the regions’ ability to optimize local own-source revenue, improve spending quality, and strengthen regional financial governance.

Additionally, Dr. Subandono introduced various alternative financing options for regional development, including the utilization of regional loans, regional bonds, and regional sukuk to support productive infrastructure development. He asserted that creative financing can be a solution for regions to increase fiscal capacity and accelerate development without neglecting the principles of fiscal prudence.

At the end of his presentation, Dr. Subandono emphasized the importance of multi-party collaboration through a penta-helix approach involving the government, higher education institutions, industry, communities, and the media. In this context, universities hold a strategic role in supporting regional fiscal optimization, producing competent human resources, and providing research-based policy recommendations for local governments. The discussion was highly interactive, featuring various questions from the students, alumni, and attendees.

Through this activity, participants gained a deeper understanding of the relationship between global geopolitical dynamics, national fiscal policy, regional fiscal resilience, and various financing innovations that can support sustainable development in Indonesia. This initiative aligns with FEB UNS’s commitment to supporting the attainment of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the provision of learning spaces relevant to public policy issues, SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by strengthening the understanding of sustainable economic growth strategies, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration between higher education institutions and the government in capacity and development policy growth.

Management Study Program, Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a Practitioner Lecture on Operations Management II featuring the Vice President of Bank Mandiri, Firman Sumabrata, on Thursday (4/6/2026). Conducted at the FEB UNS Auditorium (Building 3), the event carried the theme “Wholesale Banking Strategies to Optimize a Supply Chain System” and was attended by students as part of an effort to integrate classroom learning with real-world practices in the industry.

The Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs of FEB UNS, Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., expressed her appreciation in her opening remarks to the Management Study Program, specifically the Operations Management concentration, for initiating the activity. According to her, practitioner lectures serve as an essential medium to enrich students’ insights regarding evolving practices in the industry.

Prof. Tri explained that one of the current challenges in higher education is maintaining the relevance of study programs to the demands of the professional workforce. Therefore, students need to acquire an understanding that is derived not only from classroom theories but also from the practical experiences of industry professionals. “Hopefully, the knowledge learned on campus can serve as a valuable asset when students build their careers, whether as professionals or entrepreneurs. Through this opportunity, students can learn directly from a practitioner who possesses extensive experience in the banking industry,” she remarked.

Furthermore, she invited students to actively participate in the discussion and use the opportunity to gain as much insight as possible from the speaker.

Meanwhile, the Area Head of Bank Mandiri Solo, Edi Hargiyanto, who is also an alumnus of the FEB UNS, expressed his appreciation for the opportunity given to return and share experiences within the campus environment. He emphasized the significance of collaboration between the university and the corporate sector in preparing graduates to face professional challenges. According to him, practitioner lectures provide a real overview of how various knowledge acquired during university study are applied to numerous management activities such as operations management, supply chains, and business and financial management. Edi also introduced various career opportunities available at Bank Mandiri, stating that human resource requirements in the banking sector today are not restricted to economics graduates but also individuals from various academic disciplines according to organizational needs.

In addition, he introduced the Wirausaha Muda Mandiri program, which is consistently developed to support the growth of young entrepreneurial generations. According to him, knowledge related to management activities is beneficial not only for those pursuing careers as corporate employees but also serves as an important foundation for students who wish to establish and expand independent businesses. Through the presentation by Firman Sumabrata as a banking practitioner, students obtained insights regarding wholesale banking strategies in supporting supply chain efficiency, corporate transaction management, and the role of the banking sector in supporting business growth.

This activity represents one of FEB UNS’s commitments to delivering adaptive learning tailored to industry needs while reinforcing the connection between academic theory and professional practice in the field. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the provision of practice-based learning and industry collaboration, and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) by strengthening student competencies to face the professional workforce and advance entrepreneurship.

The Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized an online academic counseling and mentoring session on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, for undergraduate students from the cohorts of 2019, 2020, and 2021 who are approaching their maximum study limits or experiencing difficulties completing their degrees. The session commenced with an introductory address by the Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs of FEB UNS, Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih.

In her remarks, Prof. Tri emphasized that this initiative reflects the faculty’s dedicated commitment to ensuring students can successfully conclude their higher education. “The purpose of this gathering is a form of care provided by the faculty. We ultimately want the absolute best for all of you so that you can successfully complete your studies,” she stated.

Prof. Tri further detailed that the invited participants comprised students from the 2019 cohort entering their seventh year, the 2020 cohort entering their sixth year, and the 2021 cohort entering their fifth year of study. Through this forum, the faculty aimed to directly hear the diverse challenges encountered by the students and collaboratively formulate effective solutions.

Furthermore, Prof. Tri highlighted the critical importance of understanding academic regulations and maintaining active student status through mandatory semester registration. She noted that FEB UNS has published the 2025 Academic Guidelines, which are accessible via the official FEB UNS website tailored to each respective study program. “Should there be financial constraints regarding the tuition fee (UKT) payment, the university provides mechanisms to apply for financial relief. However, administrative registration must still be completed to ensure your student status remains active,” she explained.

In addition, students were briefed on the official mechanisms for academic leave, thesis completion, internships, as well as withdrawal procedures as a last resort for those facing critical time constraints.

Nevertheless, Prof. Tri strongly encouraged students to persevere in completing their degrees, particularly those who have already reached the final thesis writing stage. “For those who only have their undergraduate thesis remaining, we sincerely hope you will strive to cross the finish line, as you are just one step away,” she urged.

Following the main plenary session, the event proceeded into breakout rooms managed by the respective Heads of Study Programs. During these breakout sessions, students engaged in detailed discussions regarding academic obstacles, progress updates, and strategic measures to accelerate their graduation. Through this monitoring and evaluation initiative, FEB UNS aims to facilitate students in graduating punctually while strengthening the communication channels between the faculty, study programs, and students. This activity aligns with FEB UNS’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), by providing inclusive and sustainable higher education support services.

Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized an International Seminar entitled “AACSB Accreditation and Quality Assurance” on Monday, May 25, 2026, at UNS Inn. The event was conducted in a hybrid format, inviting virtual speakers from Universiti Putra Malaysia, while the on-site proceedings were attended by the faculty leaders, heads of study programs, lecturers, administrative staff, and various stakeholders involved in developing higher education quality assurance within FEB UNS.

This international seminar represents one of FEB UNS’s strategic initiatives to reinforce its institutional quality assurance system while supporting the progression toward international accreditation from the AACSB (Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business). The AACSB is recognized as one of the most prestigious business accreditation bodies globally, evaluating the quality of educational institutions based on international standards in governance, learning, research, institutional impact, and human resource development.

Through this agenda, FEB UNS aims to cultivate a comprehensive understanding regarding the implementation of effective and sustainable quality assurance in both academic and non-academic sectors. The seminar also served as a forum for discussion to share experiences, strategies, and best practices in addressing the challenges of international accreditation within an increasingly competitive and globalized higher education landscape.

Tastafiyan Risfandy, SE., MSc., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs FEB UNS, expressed his appreciation in his welcoming remarks to all parties who supported the preparation of the international seminar. He emphasized that fostering a robust culture of quality is an essential foundation for developing a higher education institution that is both excellent and adaptive to global transformations.

“Thank you for attending this seminar, and for the support of all parties who have facilitated the implementation of this event. This seminar serves as a pivotal momentum for FEB UNS to continuously learn and reinforce institutional quality in meeting international accreditation standards,” he stated.

Furthermore, he explained that quality assurance serves more than accreditation documentation; rather, it reflects an institutional commitment to creating an educational framework that is high-quality, transparent, accountable, and oriented toward continuous improvement.

“We hope that through this activity, FEB UNS can acquire diverse insights and strategic inputs regarding the preparation toward AACSB Accreditation and quality assurance to support sustainable academic and non-academic quality enhancement,” he explained.

During the seminar, participants gained multi-dimensional perspectives on the importance of sound institutional governance, the enhancement of outcome-based curricula, the advancement of research quality and scientific publications, the competency development of faculty and administrative staff, and the vital role of international collaboration in bolstering global university competitiveness.

Aside from it’s main objective as a platform for institutional capacity building, this international seminar reaffirms FEB UNS’s commitment to creating an innovative, inclusive, and globally-oriented higher education ecosystem. The pursuit of AACSB accreditation is expected to elevate the faculty’s international reputation while unlocking broader opportunities for collaboration with global educational institutions and industries.

Through this seminar, FEB UNS envisions the continuous reinforcement of a quality-driven culture within the university environment, driving sustainable improvements in educational services, and producing graduates who are competent, adaptive, and globally competitive.

This initiative also constitutes part of FEB UNS’s contribution toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education) and Goal 16 (Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions), by fostering strong, effective, transparent, and accountable institutional frameworks.
