The Doctoral Study Program in Economics (PDIE), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS), organized a research coaching event titled “Strategies for Writing Publishable Scientific Articles in Reputed Journals” on Thursday (21/5/2026) at the Konimex Auditorium, Bachtiar Effendi Building, FEB UNS. This event, organized in collaboration with the Doctoral Study Program in Economics Student Association (HMPDIE), featured Dr. Angga Febrian, a faculty member from Universitas Lampung who possesses an extensive publication record in reputable international journals and experience as a Scopus journal reviewer.

The Head of PDIE Study Program at FEB UNS, Prof. Agung Nur Probohudono, stated in his opening remarks that this research coaching serves as a platform to strengthen the academic capacity of doctoral students, particularly in meeting scientific publication requirements for graduation. He informed the speaker that the participants were at various stages of their doctoral studies, ranging from students still taking theoretical coursework to those preparing for their final closed dissertation defense. He further explained that the Doctoral Study Program in Economics at FEB UNS implements two curricula, the old curriculum and the new curriculum, both of which emphasize the significance of high-quality scientific publications.

Prof. Agung also introduced the profile of the program, which currently has approximately 200 active students divided into three specializations: accounting, management, and development economics, alongside various sub-specializations within each field. The program also accommodates students from the PMDSU scholarship scheme, international classes, and collaborative classes with various institutions and corporate professionals.

During his speech, he highlighted the importance of maintaining the quality of scientific publications amidst the widespread rise of predatory journals. “Therefore, hopefully through this knowledge-sharing session with Dr. Angga, students can gain valuable strategies and tips to make their articles more acceptable and avoid falling into the trap of predatory journals,” he remarked.

He added that UNS has implemented a publication board or publication dissertation board mechanism to review articles prior to submission. Additionally, UNS maintains a journal whitelist to guide students in selecting appropriate target journals.

As the main speaker, Dr. Angga Febrian shared his experiences and practical strategies for writing scientific articles that meet the standards of internationally reputed journals. Based on his presentation, writing a scientific article requires strict attention to the IMRaD structure (Introduction, Methods, Results, and Discussion) to ensure a systematic research flow.

He emphasized the necessity of defining the research topic, model, constructs, and research instruments from the very beginning of the research process. Furthermore, he noted that researchers must demonstrate a clear sense of novelty by identifying various types of research gaps, including evidence gaps, theoretical gaps, methodological gaps, and empirical gaps.

In his presentation, Dr. Angga also pointed out several common mistakes in scientific writing, such as overly lengthy manuscripts, a lack of logical coherence, and the use of outdated or less credible references. He encouraged participants to utilize recent literature and to compose their articles in a concise, clear manner that focuses directly on the contribution of the study.

Dr. Angga himself has an established track record of publishing in Scopus Q1 to Q3 journals, serves as a reviewer for several reputable international journals, and is a recipient of multi-year research grants from BRIN and BIMA.

Through this event, the Doctoral Study Program in Economics at FEB UNS hopefully prepares doctoral students to produce high-quality, high-integrity scientific publications that contribute to the advancement of the institution’s global academic reputation. This academic initiative aligns with the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 regarding Quality Education and Goal 9 regarding Innovation and Research Development.

She explained that development is fundamentally a spatially-dimensioned phenomenon; therefore, economic analysis requires a spatial perspective to generate policies that are more accurately targeted. She emphasized that development inequality, public service accessibility, and the concentration of economic activities possess a close relationship with the geographical location of a region.

The material also discussed various spatial analysis techniques such as spatial autocorrelation, kernel density estimation (KDE), overlay analysis, buffer analysis, and network analysis, which can be applied to research on poverty, regional inequality, infrastructure accessibility, tourism village development, and MSME concentrations.

In addition to the conceptual presentations, participants were introduced to various case studies regarding the application of GIS in development economics, such as tourism village mapping, tourism cluster analysis, regional development planning, and accessibility-based development priority mapping combined with economic indicators.

This activity is part of FEB UNS’s commitment to enhancing student research quality through multidisciplinary and spatial data-based approaches, while supporting the expansion of research that is highly applicable to regional development policy formulation. The training also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 regarding Quality Education, Goal 9 regarding Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, and Goal 11 regarding Sustainable Cities and Communities.

This training is part of FEB UNS’s initiatives to strengthen inclusive education services for students with disabilities. The material delivered covered understanding the diversity of disabilities, assistance strategies for students with special needs, and basic sign language practices to support more inclusive communication within the campus environment.

The Vice Dean for Academic and Research Affairs of FEB UNS, Prof. Tri Mulyaningsih, S.E., M.Si., Ph.D., emphasized in her opening remarks that disability services are not merely related to administrative or institutional aspects, but also involve human values and empathy. She shared her experience while studying in Australia in 2010, when students were asked to directly experience being a person with a disability. At that time, she used a wheelchair to move from one building to another on campus.

“If walking normally, it might only take five minutes to arrive, but when using a wheelchair, it turns out to require much more time because one must find an accessible path. From that experience, empathy emerged that our friends with special needs require greater energy, time, and mental readiness,” she expressed.

According to Prof. Tri, this experience built an awareness to be more sensitive toward the needs of individuals with disabilities. She emphasized that the increasing number of students with special needs at UNS demands that the entire academic community understand proper and disability-friendly service models. “The main principle is how we provide better services for our friends who have limitations in mobility or communication. If this later results in an increase in our inclusivity ranking, that is a bonus,” she explained.

She also noted that understanding disability services is important as preparation for social life in the future. According to her, every individual will eventually experience a decline in bodily functions as they age, making awareness of accessibility and inclusive services a shared need.

During the training, participants received instruction on assisting students with visual impairments, hearing impairments, physical disabilities, slow learners, ADHD, and autism spectrum disorder, alongside learning adaptation strategies tailored to student needs. Additionally, participants were introduced to the principles of inclusive communication and the use of simple sign language in both academic and non-academic services.

Through this activity, FEB UNS hopefully enables all service elements within the faculty environment to build a campus culture that is increasingly inclusive, friendly, and responsive to the needs of students with disabilities. This initiative aligns with supporting the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 regarding Quality Education and Goal 10 regarding Reduced Inequalities through the strengthening of inclusive education services for all groups.
